Time...endless time..time. Words...words..so many words. Atrocities...murder...terrorism. Conform..confess! Only I will decide what, if anything, needs censorship! I am terrified of the human animal!

I am trying to reach Antonio. He is a former professor of mine from the Center For Advanced Visual Studies at MIT. Antonio, I'll be in NYC on Monday . Oct 30 all day! I'll be busy with demos(DMA) and interviews/ presenting proposals (SECTUR, MOMA, WHITNEY, WOMAD)but would like to call you on the phone or see you! Presently I'm living in Monterey, Mexico and am starting up the Lab for Advanced Learning with a core of Virtual Environments. Some type of censorship is bad. An example is buying certain movies when you are only 18. Most teenagers now adays have had sexual experiences already. So why not decrease the age to á16 or 17? Thanks for your time.

Rose Scott rose09@rose09.rabbit.net
It would be helpful if the listings were broken down into contents, politics, religion, sex, ect. Then, in each section, list titles and authors in alphabetical order. This would save the user a good deal of time by not having to scan the entire listing looking for just one entry or types of entries. Also, there is a book by Aton Levay called the Necrocomacon that I believe is still banned in the USA.

Just a thought ... I been using your material as part of my dissertation research. Sure, a lot of it is quite interesting, but how about dividing it into organisations or governments as well as anything else? Cheers, Stu.

Most informative. You made into _my_ favorite places list! I want to check with the principles first, but I mnay have a web censorship incident for you, too. Keep it up.

I am a teenager myself and I feel that the Internet is the best thing to happen to technology but some people take the whole free speech thing way overboard. Sure everyone is supposed to have freedom of speech it's America. I don't think it's fair that I have to be supevised or constantly checked on by adults because some weirdo out their might try to dump me in some site where I don't want to be. I don't think teens are as responsible as some adults but I have seen some pretty irrisponsible adults out there and I have them to look up to for my romodels in life. Censorship can be a good thing but I think the line should be drawn at giving the government control over what we see. Parents need to take the time to become Internet wise and then they can set the limit on their own childs veiwing privilage.

Fate! Last week I became intimately acquainted with censorship. After publishing the third issue of the school's ".net.letter", I received a memo from the principal saying that, "several people found parts of the .net.letter offensive. After I had sent the principal my response, he wrote back with a comment referring to a "few" complaints. After I had meet with the principal, the number shrank to "two." The .net.letter went out to faculty and staff of an upper middle class suburban high school, where one would think tolerance would be observed. I sent out a ballot to determine support of the .net. letter. Out of a total population of approximately 110, I received 60 responses. FOR the .net.letter -- 60; AGAINST -- zero. Moral: Shining a light on the censors helps to make them go away. ******* Today I accidentally found this web page. Thank you for being here.

Subject: New WEB page.

 Dear Sirs,
this message to announce that a new WEB page was born on the Internet It consists of a RESEARCH WORK ABOUT THE HISTORICAL ORIGINS OF CHRISTIANITY. It has an absolute lay character and was composed for free scientific purposes. Absence of links with any religious organization is guaranteed. The author is a Senior High School teacher which is investigating the strong censorship of the real historical aspects of early Christian origins that, since long time ago, the Church has probably operated. He has already published some books on the subject.

Add Anastasia Krupnik to your list. I'm not sure on the spelling, but I fought the battle last year in a small town in Wisconsin that wanted to ban it because: She sipped from the froth of ther fathers beer and Wondered about sex when she learned whe was going to have a new sister. Also she misquoted a nun. Wonderful book.

Hello whoever reads this. I just wanted to say that I support the guy who did the BDSM pages. I feel that it could have been done better by sending out a password to access it because it is unfair that anyone could get ahold of it, but I don't feel they should have been yanked. I think that it should still be accessed with no interferences. Just as long as the audience is a mature one. Thanks! Nicole

We live in a hierarchically structured/enforced society - from the home to the government, every step of the way we give away a bit of `our right to decide for ourselves` - as such any attack on censorship is effectively an attack on the very fabric of society today - its as paradoxical as the pro-life vs pro-choice argument. ---vid

Subject: Censorship-Gwar being busted in S.C.

I thought you'd like to know that you're information is all wrong, as GWAR was arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina, ¬ in South Carolina as your information states. Gwar was not arrested solely on the basis of obscenity, they were busted, beacause the club owner, Mike Plumides, opened his club directly across the street from the Alcohol Law Enforcement offices, & openly let underage kids drink in his parking lot. Furthermore, Gwar got busted was some kid ran away from home to see them, and the kids mother was a cop.She found out where he was, & well, I guess you can visualize the rest.Obscenity, inciting a riot,(the club owner thought everyone in the club would back him if he tried to rush the cops & save Oderus Urungous from being arrested.)Well, noone backed him, & he got arrested.Once again, it is a case of Charlotte's police getting out of hand as far as their collective imagination goes.

I remember that I talked with the initaitor of this project a few years ago. The results are functioning on a daily basis, so far it is fantastic, though I could not use it as a tool, and that is a pitty. Now I did read the disclaimer at the beginning but I still think that on the bais what's in the archive now it can be easily improved. I did not find a search tool, I will look again but I did not see it. This is realy needed and not so difficult to build. Also the order in which each broad category was presented failed a logic. Time and space can be sub-categories for listings and a simple choice can be presented. It realy should be made up as a searcable database that will then construct the HTML pages directly. I was looking for instance for "copyright" as a tool of censorship and was not able to find this topic, unless I would have been willing to read through all the pages. It should be diffrent. For the rest you are doing a fine job and one last remark, why not making better icons and using grey scale images that will look nicer and will load faster..

I thought it was done very well, and it helped me a lot in my research of Mark Twain. I absolutely do not believe in any censorship. Government should not have the right to stop me or anybody from seeing things they feel are innapropriate. How are people supposed to learn and grow as an intellectual.

Marshall Scott Inknpaper@gnn.com
My concern with the anti censorship movement (if that is an appropriate description) is that when I've looked into the facts of particular "book banning efforts" It seems to be most often a case of Parental concern regarding the appropriateness of the subject based on their childs age and maturity. Or in the case of public libraries, the purchase of books with limited funds that do not represent the communities standards, rather they represent an individuals, or groups, (or publishers) personal agenda. A carefull check of the libraries records will show what books are often on waiting lists, and what "controversial" or "threatend" books take up space on the shelf. If you have evidence that I am wrong in my assesment I would appreciate hearing it. Thanks

rob

I went to a high school in a small, very conservative town where many people felt the need to censor the school library I got hold of the list of books that had been pulled from the shelves, and read them. As a teenager, I was just trying to rebel. It turned out that the books that had been banned were the best books around. That list got be reading Mark Twain, and well too many authors to mention. All great stuff. It got me started reading stuff that was not homework. Without the book censors, I would probably have never read any of that stuff. So in a twisted way, censorship opened up the world of literature for me. of course, it only worked because I could find the book else where. Actually banning books is as bad an idea as electing jesse helms.

pblago@xbase.com
I find your project to be politically correct. It reflects the unwillingness of prudent people to come close to the high-tension wires of present day's dogmas progressively closing the American mind. For instance entries on questioning modern history, which are officially banned in many countries including the US and Canada and unofficially banned from mentioning anywhere except with a label slapped on them, are predictably missing. The label-slapping is already automatic. Deflecting the attention from the big bans of the century is not something I would be proud of. Are the entries censured?

radio invades my space. almost everywhere i go someone has a radio playing. radio is like second hand cigarette smoke. i have a right not to be offended by the radio. if i am walking down a beach with my kids, and someone is playing a radio that my kids and i can hear, then radio should be censored. if that same radio is being used with headphones then i think it should be uncensored.

Mark W. Ripley mwripley@clandjop.com
Hello - The US high-school prayer article (in the USA section of censorship) is misleading. I am an avid proponent of free-speech and a vehement opponent of censorship. Censorship is by definition a policy of examining and suppressing material considered morally or otherwise objectionable. This has nothing to do with publically forcing people to endure a prayer which may or may not be acceptable to / compatible with their religion. It concerns public school (remember seperation of church and state?) functions, which have no relevence whatsoever to religious functions. So, for example, prohibiting a Republican party song being led before the game would fit the same criterion as prohibiting a religious prayer - niether has place at a public school gathering of this type. Niether does a nude dance review or ritual sacrifice. Would prohibiting those be considered censorship also? I assume those are prohibited? Please consider this when putting up pages that may be viewed by an incredible number of people. People are using your page as a vehicle for their own religious agenda. Sincerely, Mark W. Most objects around youwere at one timwe Technological artifacts like Printing presses, slicedbread and self-adhesive tape. Strange new things move out of the realm to"High-tech" to "Applience" like Microwaves and VCRs. Once something becomesavailable to the comsumer, there is some concern about the safety andpracticality and suddenly, society accepts the new into its bossum. Thatprocesss has had a drastic change with the onset of the "Information Age."The Society of the world has gotten a little taste of the power of a vastlyimproved Global Nervous System. The Internet is the first stpep in the laststage of human communnication ( until, of course we all become amorphouslight beings ). With it, we have the print capabillities of books andnewspapers, along with multi-media goodies that we are accostumed to fromtelavision, like audio, like video, and instantanious content. The Internetadds a few cardinal ellements, Interactivitry and real-time feed back andmost important, it alows ANYONE ( almost ) the freedon to publish withequality. Its pretty hard as an artist to get your work broadcast on Television. Itseven harder to get published in a book. On the Web, you are free to publishyour own stuff using your own judgement, and broadcast that to an unlimitedaudience. The real bonus is that YOU can have as large a presence as anybig monster corporation! There is no economicly controled reason why yoursite shouldn't be as popular and successful as Time-Warner or CNN's Website. There has got to be some good reason why the world needs 10 millionbroudcasters and publishers!

First. WONDERFUL Site, GREAT service. I hope you've registered it widely in the search engines. Is it registered in WEBBASE, the search engine for Artswire? The URL would take me too long to list here but you can get to it thru my Artslynx site (in the internet resources section). Too bad not too many folks are adding cases. I just added one and it is quite unusual. In fact there is no category really for the supposed offence. I put it under political but here it is a city's "environmental enforcement office" that is instigating the action against a theatre owner.....for following the contractual instructions from a script (smoking on stage). Even though you have no category on this my research thru artswire and other sources show that cases go back at least two years (Amherst MA).

Munir Pervaiz mmunir@inforamp.net
During a recent visit to Pakistan, I was fortunate to meet a great man, Mr. Zamir Niazi who could be truly called the conscience of Pakistani journalism. I promised him that when I returned to Canada I would introduce his name and works to the Internet community of Pakistanis and people interested in Pakistan. In order to fulfill this promise I am repeating here an article written by Mr. Altaf Gauhar. -------------------------------------------------------- Proud Performance of an Award Winner Altaf Gauhar The Nation,Islamabad, Pakistan February 09, 1996 (Mr. Altaf Gauhar was previously the Information Secretary in Pakistan, He was also editor Of Dawn Karach, Third Word Quarterly and the South Magazine) I know it is a bit long but hope that the readers will bear with me in understanding the censorship in Pakistan. Thanks -------------- Zamir Niazi, a research scholar and journalist received the Pride of Performance Award from the President of Pakistan on March 23, 1995, along with a cheque for his services in the field of literature (Journalism). Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, extended to him her sincere felicitations and said that the award was "certainly well deserved and the nation is rightly proud of you'. On the first of July 1995 Zamir Niazi renounced the award. Behind that act of renunciation lies a human story which few people are aware of. Zamir Niazi joined Dawn, Karachi, as a sub editor in 1953, and retired as News Editor of Business Recorder in 1992. He hit the headlines when he published his first book, Press in Chains, in 1986. It was a passionate piece of work in which Niazi trace the government - press relationship since pre partition days. The humiliating process of press subjugation in Pakistan was described with scholarly objectivity. Ayub Khan's Press and Publication Order (1963) was examined and I came in for severe criticism, with justification, but without malice. His next book . Press under Siege, appeared in 1992, in which the role of various governments in suppressing the press was discussed. His latest work, The Web of Censorship, published in 1994 narrated the story of press humiliation under various dictatorial regimes, both civil and military. I called on Niazi in Karachi last Month. He lives in a modest house in Gulshan e Iqbal. Along the way, I came across huge sandbags and bunkers , with gunmen poised for action behind them. People were going about their business as usual but there was fear and alienation writ large on their faces. Niazi is sick and bedridden but his mind is remarkably lucid and his judgment fiercely penetrating. I told him that I was studying the. growth of the Press in the sub continent but had been unable to find any books in the university libraries. Before I could finish the sentence, he left the room in great physical pain, and his son started bringing in poles of books in Urdu and English on the origins and development of the Press in India since the 1860s. All these books he told me , would be put in the library of Dawn after me and in return Dawn will provide photocopies of any material to the readers free of charge. As I was leaving Niazi, he gave me a packet which I did not open till I reached home. The packet contained copies of correspondent between the President of Pakistan and Zamir Niazi about his Pride of Performance Award. In his letter of acceptance , Niazi thanked the President and said that " it is not an award for an individual. It is the recognition of the power of the written word. It is also an award for the epic struggle of journalists for the freedom of Press". He had decided to accept the award on the understanding that the " people's right to know would be fully and faithfully protected under your stewardship, as proclaimed by you and the present government from time to time". That was the opening scene if a bizarre drama that was to follow. The government launched a fierce operation in Karachi to fight the MQM 'terrorists'. Hundreds of people were arrested and tortured. Whole colonies were besieged and the Rangers and the police were given orders to shoot to kill. Karachi eveningers , with their combined circulation exceeding two million , started exposing the role of security forces without fear. In a state of desperation, the Federal Minister of Interior, who was masterminding the operation , banned the publication of all the evening papers on the ground that they were publishing imaginary horror stories and fake photographs to malign the government. Zamir Niazi was shocked. He wrote to the President that he had accepted the Pride of Performance Award on the clear understanding that the government would protect the people's right to know, but the conduct of the government had betrayed that understanding. Niazi renounced the honor and while returning the decoration, together with the monetary donation, he said ' Never in the bleak history of Pakistan, not even under the tyrants who have ruled over us, have six newspapers been banned with a single stroke of pen, using the cover of draconian Maintenance of Public Order 1960. This was done by the government of state you head, without assigning any justifiable specific reason. An appeal against an order passed under the MPO lies only with the government. This is tantamount to appealing to Nero for relief against a death sentence handed down by him. Niazi was witness to the suffering and anguish of the people of Karachi. In his parting salvo, he told the President . ' I am disgusted by the news I have been reading for the pat week emanating from Islamabad. While Karachi is burning and its citizens are being gunned down, you, the President, your Prime Minister, the members of your National Assembly, the officers of your administration, and the armed forces are making merry at dinner parties to strains of musical and singing performances. This is done at the peoples' expense: It is also a slap in the face of all of us in Karachi as it amply displays the concerns of those that lead us'. No. Niazi was not hauled up and prosecuted for sedition. Nor did the government deny any of the accusations made by a person who had been chosen by the government for the highest literary award : a person that the nation was rightly prod of according to the Prime Minister. Such a person renouncing a national award on the ground that the government had betrayed its commitment to the Freedom of the Press should have rung the alarm bells in the corridors of power. But we have our own bureaucratic way of dealing with such situations. Niazi's letter to the President was passed on to the Cabinet Division where it remained under consideration for more than five months. Both the Law and the Interior Ministries must have spent weeks examining the legal and security implications of Niazi's renunciation of the award. Finally it was recommended to the ' competent authority (a marvelous phrase), namely the President that , Niazi deserved to spend the rest of his life with the like of Shaikh Rashid Ahmed in Bahawalpur Jail. However, considering that he was a sick old moron and medical expenses on his maintenance as a prisoner would be an unnecessary burden on the severely depleted public exchequer, it was best to ignore the whole matter. The competent authority was assured that the Press will be advises that in Niazi's own interest , unnecessary publicity should not be given to the unfortunate incident. Perfect Baboo solution to a disagreeable problem! Accordingly, the Joint Secretary of the Cabinet Division informed Niazi that it has been decided to withdraw the award with the approval of the competent authority. Necessary notification in this regard has been issued. Niazi was told that the cheque in question has been lapsed, may kindly be revalidated and returned to this division at the earliest convenience. Not a word about the charges leveled by Niazi against the government. In his reply, Niazi wrote to the Joint Secretary, Cabinet Division: ' I am highly grateful to the competent authority for relieving me of this award. I renounced it in protest against the imposition of ban on six Karachi dailies by some other competent authority. Last week the same drama was re-enacted by another competent authority, a mere SHO. ordering half a dozen editors to appear in his Darbar. Any way once again I thank the competent authority for his kind gesture , I am enclosing the cheque as desired by you'. Niazi must be a far sighted man. Had he encashed the cheque, when he recieved it, he would have to sell his books to avoid being ion the list of defaulters. But he lives to fight another day. ------------------------------------------------ Mr. Zamir Niazi is suffering from cancer and continues to write about censorship in Pakistan, be it by the governments, political organizations, or fanatics. He is the author of the following books: The Press in Chains Royal Book Company Karachi 1986 The Press under Siege Karachi Press Club Karachi 1992 The Web of Censorship Oxford University Press Karachi 1994 Mr. Zamir Niazi's Correspondent address is as follows: 172- B- 4-A Gulshan e Iqbal Karachi - 75300 -- M. Ours is a case, not of cencorship, but one of a conspiratorial cover-up/suppression of the truth of our legal defense and counterclaims, done, under color of law and official duty in the courts of the judicial branch of our government. On May 12, 1996 the FBI received my Homepage and booklet of the facts of our complaint entitled "America's Courts of In-justice" as a part of our complaint involving the most vial of frauds and civil rights violations. But, absent this net alert, it is likely the FBI will hold the politically powerful conspirator Oklahoma law firms, bankers, judges and their OK Bar Association above the laws they enforce against the people at large. Absent public scruitny, it is also doubtful the FBI will seek the material evidence of false sworn court instruments offered by me. V.Germano

First off, I would like to thank you for the online reference materials! It's a thankless job sometimes, and you deserve recognition for your efforts. Now for the complaint: I have noticed a disturbing trend; people hotly, even savagely, debating laws and bills that they have not read! Well, this would seem to pertain to just about everything, but I am currently focusing on legal documents. This first came to my attention with the passing of the infamous Amendment Two here in Colorado. I've always insisted that I have the actual text of a document before discussing it; I just didn't realize that other people didn't feel the same need to be informed before formulating an opinion. I was amazed! Time after time when I debated the validity of A2, I would ask, "Have you READ the amendment?" Ninety percent of the time the answer was "Uh, no, but I know what it says!" "How can you know what anything says unless you have read it yourself!", I would reply. I'll get to my point now... please include the full text of the law, or the bill, or at least a link to it in your online library. Again thank you for your efforts, Mike Bethany Sr. IS Engineer Micro House International http://www.microhouse.com PS You can find the full text of Amendment Two at http://www.aescon.com/crs/crs95/colocons/a64.htm
